I'm not sure he's "hated" and certainly not for one character. He was a visionary director that lost his way at some point and whatever talent he had ebbed away under the weight of his early success. He made some shitty movies, which isn't really a big deal unless you bleed Star Wars. But the universe has a lot of potential and now thankfully the reigns are being handed over to filmmakers whose best days aren't behind them. Can't wait to see what Rian Johnson does with the next one.

George can be praised for the influence and creativity it took to start the universe and at the same time he can be criticized for the work that followed. It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

The way I see it, the prequel trilogy will always be like The Godfather Part 3 of Star Wars. People will always whine about it but they'll still going to watch it. Nobody's ever going to watch a Star Wars marathon and skip The Phantom Menace just because they don't like Jar Jar Binks. They're going to suck it up anyway. But yes, I'm extremely curious to see how Episode 8 pans out. Episode 8 is practically the Empire Strikes Back of this new trilogy. That's a very tough one to beat.

Technically, that's an original trilogy marathon. That one's for people who don't want to spend the entire day sitting on a couch. But they keep the box set of the entire saga in display because it looks nice.
