Forum Redsign - thoughts needed

Postby Dazza » Tue Sep 29, 2009 2:49 pm

Samchez is putting together a new design for the forum. You can see how its coming along over here.

http://www.samchez.org/forums/

All I told him I wanted was for it to feel like a natural extension of the main site and for it to take advantage of different resolutions.

We're pretty open to any suggestions so let us know.

I like the current theme too.

The new forum stretches to the side a bit too much IMO. Current one that we have here is a bit narrow, but the prototype is a bit too wide.

Are you having to scroll? Cos that would be bad. For me it fits my resolution perfectly, which I really like.

No need for scrolling, but stretching all the way out to either side is a bit too much IMO. But then again, my taste in design is somewhere between chance of Clone dating Natalie and Clone getting laid.

I am not sure that the forum should fit a widescreen. I have one, but I like the forum as it is (pretty narrow); not the whole screen is needed to display all the informations.

I agree with you dazza, it'd be better if it looked more like the main site.

But that test forum is not bad either, it just doesn't really fit the site.

Maybe its something that can be chosen in someone's profile settings. Cos I hate the empty space to either side of the forum. Must be close to 50% of the screen unused.

I don't really give a shit because for forum-browsing my windows are usually 1/4 screen width, but in theory it's sort of ridiculous how it's currently set up. I don't think anyone even owns a nonwidescreen anymore.

I don't often visit the forum, but I thought I'd come take a look at the possible changes. So I feel kinda...wrong(?) about making any suggestions even though I keep telling myself I'm going to start coming to the forum! Anyway, got that ramble out of the way...

I like the design of what is up so far, but I do also agree it should mirror the main site. As to fitting widescreen monitors, I have always been all for that and often get frustrated when pages don't b/c often a site is too narrow for my monitor. When Dazza first mentioned redesigning the main page, that was a request I put in actually, to have it fit all screen resolutions. If it ends up being that way, the banner definitely needs to be longer...it looks weird.

I do but I only use the old monitor as a backup so I guess either way is fine with me. I have to scroll from left to right when I use the old monitor with the way things are right now anyways.

Rich and out of touch wih us poor monitor(1990s) loving plebs...lol

My 17" monitor set at 1024 x 768 fits both the existing & new
set-ups perfectly

The only issue for mine always comes back to colour
Long as they dont clash too much its all good

I have a widescreen but I my browser windows are a fixed width because 90% of the websites on the internet look retarded with the whole window expanded.

ia. I haven't been able to stand having a maximized browser since I got this larger, widescreen monitor.

I try to keep my browser at 1280x1024 because it still seems like that is good for most sites.

One thing that bugs me about the redesign is the large grey boxes around categories. It feels clunky. Maybe even just taking out the grey area above the white lines might make it look nicer.

Yes, I still use old monitor. To me the width is just too much.
