Question - how much tweaking to the settings do you guys do for each shot? The reason I ask is because when I take photos they look approximately 89x worse and I wonder how much of it is down to skill and how much is the camera (I've had mine for 7 years so its pretty old).

I generally keep the settings on "Auto", and still can get decent shots; but I don't take pictures like Rachel's, I prefer to take just what's in front of me; which is why I don't really have time to play with the settings. My camera is only 1.5 year old (an Olympus ST500 UZ); I had an older one, but the quality was crap (one of the first digital cameras).

My camera, and some pics :

I change/tweek about 5-10 parts of my settings.

that includes:
    colors (saturation, brightness darkness, sharpness)
    1. 2. 3.
The type of flash (syncro, auto, red eye, etc),
    1. 2. 3.
    evaluation of lighting part.
(idont have photo to show what this is)
    the focus (Macro, normal, landscape.)
    1. 2. 3.
the type of environment (inside, outside, dark)
    1. 2. 3.
and the shutter (Sunlight=Take pic quickly. few light=Slowly.)
    1. 2. 3.
Then there are the randomly freakish settings:
    3.
.

i've gotten to where i can do all that within 3-5 seconds.

I don't change my camera settings a huge amount. I do use filters sometimes, the last two were done with a polariser, I haven't got any with anything else on the comp right now.
